The choker trend has taken off, and it is bigger than ever before. We all remember chokers in the 90’s, but this new wave of chokers that started around the end of last year has everyone pushing the envelope with all kinds of cool new ideas.
From denim, to floral, to leather and velvet. The truth is, you don’t need to throw down major money to rock a creative and trendy choker this holiday season. I’ve compiled a list of choker ideas which you can make yourself using only scissors and commonly found household objects! And all for less than $5.
TREND #1: Chain Choker
Why buy an expensive real gold or silver chain choker when you can simply make your own? I got this cheap long-chain necklace from the dollar store and repurposed it into a beautiful choker with a hanging element. Very 90’s and very classy. This could go nicely with both a dressy evening gown or a casual day look.
TREND #2: Silk
For this choker, you have so many different options for style/colour/width. I’m pretty sure somewhere throughout your room or your home, you can find a bag or some gift wrap that came along with silky ribbon. Cut the ribbon up and tie it around your neck, and voila you have a classy silk choker which can be paired with either a more dressed up or casual outfit. I chose this nice dark brown colour, but you can do white, pink, anything you can find!
TREND #3: Denim
This DIY may seem a bit more complicated, but it is actually fairly simple! Most of us probably have a pair or two of jeans that we keep in the bottom of our drawer with no intention of wearing ever again. Take a pair of good scissors, and cut it to the width you want it. You can even fray the edges to make it a little more of a statement piece. I left mine plain, but also a bit raw and uneven. This could look great with an edgy band tee or a dark off the shoulder shirt.
TREND #4: Bougie diamond choker
This is another major trend we’ve seen a LOT lately. You might be intimidated to join the league of celebs and Instagram personalities who rock this look daily, because you think how darn expensive the diamond chokers must be, right? Not so. Behold, this “diamond” (it’s really plastic) material which you can find at any Michael’s craft store for less than $5/foot. All you need is enough length to wrap around your neck once. Use your scissors to cut incisions in the back, or (if you’re lazy like me) you can just tie it into a knot since the material is soft enough. Pairing this with a nice nude camisole or a silky tank can take your outfit from plain jane to Marlene Dietrich super quickly.
I hope you enjoyed this list, but don’t limit yourself to these options. You can honestly and truly make a funky choker out of basically anything. Sometimes, looking good really doesn’t have to cost more than $5.00!
