I like to clean out my closet seasonally. Although that may seem a bit much, it’s an excellent way to stay on top of my clothing clutter. If you don’t have the time or patience to do it quarterly, springtime is the perfect season to purge. Decluttering can be a life long battle, and if you don’t stay on top of it, it can become extremely overwhelming.
If I only had one tip to share, it would be to hold onto pieces that you absolutely love. We go through so many emotions when we start to clean, that we often forget the end goal. Try not to feel guilty that you spent money on something that you’ll never wear or no longer love. Try not to let fear get in the way. We often feel like if we let several items go, we’ll have nothing to wear. Finally, don’t get frustrated. Remember, you’re going to do this at least once a year.
Follow these quick and easy tips for a clutter-free closet today. Take everything out of your closet… and I mean everything. Starting with a clean slate, this will keep you motivated to only put back only the items that you love.
I like to divide my clothes into 4 piles. A section that I absolutely love and that fit me well. A ‘maybe’ pile, items that I’m unsure about and need time to think about. A donate pile filled with items that are in near perfect condition that I know others could enjoy. Finally, a trash pile. These are items that I no longer enjoy and are in poor condition.
Remember to toss everything that doesn’t fit. We tend to hold onto pieces that “we hope” might fit one day, but this is extremely discouraging. This goes hand in hand with pieces that are physically painful to wear. Life’s too short to wear painful clothing!
If you haven’t worn an item in a while, or if the tags are still on them months later, it’s time to let them go. If you haven’t worn something in over a year or if you had forgot about it (until now), let it go. Also, keep an eye out for damaged items or clothing items that have stains on them. Chances are, you’re never going to fix them.
If you have trendy pieces that you only planned to enjoy for a season or two, this is the perfect time to donate. Don’t hold onto pieces that you hope will come back in style. This creates more clutter and leaves you feeling stressed out. Also, all the gifts that you’ve received that you know are not your style and that you’re never going to wear, pass them on.
It’s now time to evaluate your piles. Package up the items you wish to donate and take them out of the room immediately. Do the same for the ones that are trash. You’re now left with 2 neat and tidy piles. It’s time to take a closer look at your “maybe” pile. Try on all the clothes you’re unsure of and ask yourself these simple questions. Do I feel fabulous in this and will I be able to wear it within the next 6 months? If you’re answer is no, it’s time to let it go.
It’s now time to put the remaining items back in your closet. If you have additional storage in your home, you could place season items in another closet. And voilà! You’re done! Until next time….
