The beginning of a new year is a great time to refocus your energy on the things that are most important to you. There will always be the usual priorities like work and family, but if you want to make 2017 your best year yet, what you really need to do is make your own happiness and well being your number one priority. Putting other people’s needs before your own isn’t sustainable in the long run, so instead of playing the martyr, try putting yourself first for a change. It’s about time, don’t you think?
Figure out how you really feel about your job
Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been in your field for years already, your current job probably isn’t perfect. There are probably certain things you can’t change (not everyone is in a position to up and quit whenever they feel like it), but there are ways to improve your situation, or at the very least start taking steps towards improving it. If you’re really unhappy, take some time to dust off the old resume. You’ll never find something new unless you actually apply, after all. If you’re happy with the company you work for, but you’d like a new challenge, research some freelancing opportunities in your field.
You don’t have to accept the status quo at work. If you’re unhappy, make it your mission to change things for the better — whatever that might mean for you — by the time you ring in 2018.
Ditch toxic relationships
Do you ever find yourself feeling drained after spending time around certain types of people? It’s possible for bad energy to rub off on you, even if you’re determined not to let someone else’s negativity bring you down. Some relationships just aren’t meant to last a lifetime, and that’s okay. This year, purge the toxic friendships from your life and make room for people who have a more positive influence on you.
Obviously, there will always be people that you’re kind of stuck with (your overly critical Aunt Brenda, for example), so just limit your interaction with them. When you are around them, be mindful of how they’re making you feel and remove yourself from the situation if you feel yourself getting frustrated or upset.
Get your health in check
Being healthy is more than just eating right and exercising every day. When is the last time you went to the dentist? What about had your eyes checked? Do you still do routine check ups with your family doctor? Staying on top of every aspect of your health is the best way to catch things that are out of the ordinary. Don’t forget about your mental health either. Even if you feel like you have things under control, a visit to a therapist once a month never hurt anyone.
While you’re at it, double check your benefits package at work and find out if perks like massage therapy are included. Might as well use them if you have them, right?
Do something you’ve always wanted to do
Have you always wanted to learn how to knit? Has a trip to Europe been on your bucket list for years and you’ve never been able to make it happen? Do you want to try skydiving or scuba diving or join a sports league? Well, 2017 is the year you’re going to make it all happen. Or at the very least, get the ball rolling on some of your bigger aspirations. Even if all you can do right now is open a savings account for your eventual trip to see the Eiffel Tower in person, that’s a big step.
Getting out of your comfort zone isn’t always easy, but when you make the effort to try new things and put some of your plans into action, it will make you feel like anything is possible. However big or small, do something new this year. There’s no way you’ll regret it.
