Being a Millennial isn’t easy. There’s school, work, finding a job, balancing the work/social life balance – it can be pretty overwhelming. We wanted to find out what millennials like YOU were up to and how you were dealing with the real world.
This week we interviewed Angela, a 22 year old living in Toronto. She is an Assistant Producer at Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment and has been working there for several months.
What led you to the position you’re in now?
During high school I took a course in yearbook and that validated my love/passion for pursuing a career in the creative field. Following that, I chose to go to Queen’s University where I ended up earning a degree in Film & Media. Queen’s and the City of Kingston gave me plenty of opportunities for growth such as — being a Videographer for the OHL Kingston Frontenacs, being part of Station 14 & VIVA Productions as a Production Assistant as well as being part of TV Cogeco. Also, I gained experience during a summer internship at CityTV’s Cityline. These experiences have led me to where I am today – Assistant Producer @ Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment.
How did you finally realize your decision was right for you?
I knew this is what I wanted to do when it was the only thing I could think of when I had days off. I would think about what ideas I could implement and share, how I wanted to see growth in my content and how to maximize audience viewership.
Do you have any advice/tips for those applying to the program or want to major/ go into the same field as you?
Definitely find something you enjoy and you like to do, something that is a hobby to you and you won’t constantly have to look at the clock and countdown when your shift is done. Internships are key and interning is a smart way to get your foot in the door. Network like crazy and always go above and beyond your assigned task. Also, don’t be afraid to reach out to people on LinkedIn-there are people who want to give you advice and help you. Whatever you do, do it with a big smile on your face!
