Being a Millennial isn’t easy. There’s school, work, finding a job, balancing the work/social life balance – it can be pretty overwhelming. We wanted to find out what millennials like YOU were up to and how you were dealing with the real world.
This week we interviewed Danielle, a 22 year old living in Toronto. She is a first year nursing student at Seneca College.
What led you to the position that you’re in now?
I did my undergraduate degree in health sciences at the University of Western Ontario and I was sure that I wanted to apply to dentistry school afterward. I went through the process of applying including writing the DAT test. However, after the long process, I realized that the profession wasn’t for me and that I wanted to do something that would have more meaning. I decided that nursing would be the right path for me – and so far I love it!
How did you finally realize your decision was right for you? / Is it right for you? Do you wish that you had pursued something else?
I believe no profession can always be “right for you” forever or immediately. I think it takes time to love what you do and I’m still learning the ropes, but so far I’m loving it!
Do you have any advice/tips for those applying to the program or want to major/ go into the same field as you?
If you don’t like the program you’re in on the first day, stick it out for at least 3 weeks and then reassess. Everything is new for everyone and no one likes change, but if you stick around, you’ll start to become more familiar with the people and the content and you might end up liking it more than you initially thought.
Any other comments that you have about your university career / job thus far?
I’m impressed with the fact that every professor is unique. I agree with some teaching styles more than others, but ultimately, every diverse learning experience contributes to my growth in the program, which is something I know I will benefit from in the long run.
What do you think is the most common misconception about millennials and what do you want people to know?
Most common misconception – that all of us are amazing with technology. No, I don’t know how to fix every broken device you own, I’m a millennial not a genius…!
Thanks for reading. Is there anything else you want us to ask our Millennials?
