How To Decorate Your Home For The Holidays; Canadian Fashionista’s Home Tour

The holiday season really is the most wonderful time of the year. I love filling each room in our home with the magic of Christmas. That being said, decorating your home for the holidays is a true labour of love. I tend to go all out and transform my home into a winter wonderland. It’s a lot of work, but there’s something incredibly enchanting about trimming the entire house from top to bottom. Adding a little touch of each season to every room in your home gets you into the holiday spirit.

Here are some tips and tricks to get your home into the holiday spirit!

Switch It Up!

As much as I’d love to buy new Christmas décor every year, it’s unrealistic. Putting out the same decoration year after year can get boring, so look for new ways to incorporate “older” items, in a fresh and exciting way. Simply by switching up the areas or rooms you place them in, can give the illusion that they are new pieces. If you are looking for new pieces to add to your collection, without breaking the bank, head to Michaels and Homesense. Both stores offer a wide variety of options, without clearing out your bank account. 99% of the holiday décor you see in this post is from both stores.

Add New Pieces

Every year, I try and add in a few new pieces to my Christmas collection, just to give a fresh feel to my home. This year, it’s all about the bottle brush trees. Try grouping a few together, into little vignettes, to make a bold and strong statement.

Ornaments Aren’t Just For The Tree!

Another fun idea is to take lanterns and place unused ornaments inside. We all end up with extra bulbs that aren’t being used on the Christmas tree, and this is an excellent way to tie the entire room together.

Pom Pom Trees

These pom pom trees might be my favourite addition this year! I have them placed in our entrance way. I paired it with fun packages that greet you as soon as you walk in the front door. These white and gold boxes are actually from last year, but tie in beautifully with the cream and blush shades of the trees.

Don’t Forget Santa!

No home is complete without a little milk and cookies for Santa. Instead of regular milk, I thought it would be fun to create a hot chocolate station. Stack treats and cookies on a gorgeous cake plate, then add a few festive mugs, hot cocoa, cinnamon and marshmallows to a tiered cupcake stand and you’re all set. Your guests can warm up with a hot drink and snack as soon as they walk in the door.

Get Cozy

New pillows and throws are an excellent way to give your home a warm and cozy feel. It’s also a fairly inexpensive way to create a new holiday look and add texture and colour to your home.

Decorating Your Tree

As for your Christmas tree, as much as it’s fun to play with colour, I highly suggest investing in some neutral ornaments to start. We purchased two new trees this season, but were happy that we had some classic white, silver and gold bulbs already in our collection. We used them as a base and added in a few special pops of pink to go with the general theme of our home. Ribbon is another fun piece to add, we’ve done this for the past few years. This season we decided on a beaded garland and statement flowers instead. New wrapping paper is an inexpensive way to make a huge statement under the tree. Look for paper and boxes that match the theme of your tree to make a bold impact.
