Summer is officially here, which means endless trips to the beach, backyard BBQ’s, drinks on the patio, and wedding season! The question always arises – what do I wear in this hot weather? Well, if you find that perfect summer dress, it’s the one piece of clothing in your wardrobe that is suitable for all occasions and can easily take you from day to night. Looking and feeling your best is all about focusing on the positive, and a simple dress can help you achieve this. Picking out a figure-flattering dress is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the skin you’re in and look amazing at every event you attend this season.
1. Find A Dress That Suites Your Body Shape
My number one tip when shopping for that perfect summer dress is to try not to mentally focus on that “perfect body” checklist and work with the beautiful features you were born with. There is no “perfect” size and no “perfect” body. We are all shaped differently and that’s what makes us unique. I know it can be a never-ending challenge to find something that fits your natural curves and highlights your best features, but the key is to keep searching…never settle. Learn to accept your body as it is and learn how to dress the body you have. Fit and balance is more important than trends and sizes.
If you’re not very curvy and your hips are around the same size as your waist, you have a rectangular body shape. The goal is to highlight your thinnest part of your waist to give the illusion of a more proportional hip and bust. Try finding a dress that helps define your waist or fake it with prints and patterns. Small side cut-outs can help create curves and help balance out the rest of your body.
For those with a pear shape body and who tend to carry a little extra weight around their hips, the goal is to elongate and balance your figure by accentuating your top half. The summer is the perfect time to show off those sexy arms with an off-the-shoulder dress or one with an embellished neckline. The bare shoulders will take some of the attention off your lower body and bring the eyes upwards. An A-shape or fit and flare dress will help highlight the smallest part of your waist and conceal a slightly wider hip. This will also help give structure to the upper body and make you look more proportioned.
For my ladies that have a slim lower body, but carry some weight around your middle section, you’re an apple body shape. The goal is to minimize your midsection by highlighting your shoulders and legs. Avoid tight dresses and opt for ones with a fuller bottom. Puffy sleeves or too much detail on the upper potion of your body can draw unwanted attention, instead look for something sleeveless or tailored to your body. A dress with a slightly higher waistband that hits at your smallest part of the torso and flares out over your stomach, like a shift-dress, is an excellent option.
For all my hourglass ladies, the goal is to highlight your curves, not hide them. Look for a dress that emphasizes your waist. A deep V-neck can help give the illusion of a smaller torso or a wrap-style to help highlight the curve between your waist and hips. Vertical stripes and darker colours can also help elongate and slim the body and create the illusion of a smaller torso.
2. Take Risk
Don’t be afraid to take a risk. If a bold print, asymmetrical design, ruffle or lace detail is too much for you, you can always have fun with accessories. A colourful clutch or great pair of earrings or shoes can really complete a look. Metallic pumps are especially hot this season and can instantly up-date any look. This is a great way to stand out from the crowd and make a statement.
3. Find your perfect shade
Brightly coloured dresses instantly elate one’s mood and the people around you. Darker hues tend to hide imperfections and elongate and slim the body. For those with cool-tone skin, shades with pink, red and bluish undertones look the most flattering on you, whereas those with warm-tone skin look best in yellow, peach and golden undertones. Brightly coloured dresses will be more appropriate for weddings and happy occasions, while darker shades are more suitable for formal events.
Try experimenting with different materials, such as neoprene, silk, satin and faux leather. Depending on the cut, style and material of the dress, you’ll be able to dress up the look for both evening, daytime and weekend events.
