Toxic Ingredients In Your Beauty Products That You Probably Don't Know About

How can you love your products if you don't know what is in them? This is a question I ask myself time and time again. The reason for this is because we don't know what we are looking for most of the time.

What is a harmful chemical? What is a safe chemical? What are the differences?! Here are a couple chemicals to steer clear from while checking the ingredients of the back of the bottle, whether it is deodorant or nail polish. Check your ingredients, you may be shocked or surprised at what you are putting on your body and what harmful effects could come of it.

Parabens are often used in skin care and beauty products to preserve items while they sit on store shelves. These chemicals prevent contamination of the products we use every day. With this, perishable ingredients don't break down over time and can cause the spread of bacteria and viruses. There are many natural products that are now paraben free, because of the link it has to breast cancer and negative impact on the endocrine system. Parabens are also a common cause of skin allergies. Grape seed extract is a natural paraben which products are now using to substitute the risks of these chemicals.

Phthalates can be found in products such as nail polishes, deodorants, moisturizing lotions, hair sprays and perfumes. They are used to keep products soft and flexible but can be very hazardous to your health. Phthalates are linked to a variety of cancers including breast, kidney, liver, and lung. Many products are now phthalate free because of these deadly links.

"There is no scientific evidence proving that antibacterial agents are any more effective than plain soap and water."

Formaldehyde is a colourless, flammable gas that can be an ingredient in some hair treatments and nail polishes. Formaldehyde is linked to many health concerns like cancer, nervous system issues, respiratory irritations and immunity suppressing qualities. If you look at the ingredients in your products, try to avoid any products with the "ETH" in it because they share similar qualities to formaldehyde!

Propylene Glycol

Propylene Glycol can be found in your hair sprays, makeup, conditioners, shampoos, sunscreens, and moisturizers. This is a skin conditioning agent that has been linked to skin irritants and allergies as well as skin conditions like dermatitis and hives.

Are used to moisturize, soften and smooth skin. Siloxanes are used in deodorants for smoothness as well as in hair products to encourage a quicker dry time and a silky texture. Unfortunately, these chemicals are toxic and are suspect to be endocrine disrupters. Siloxanes can also hinder your reproduction system over time.

Antibacterial Agents

Antibacterial agents, such as triclosan can be found in your toothpaste to your aftershave as well as acne treatments, deodorants, soaps, and moisturizers. There is no scientific evidence proving that antibacterial agents are any more effective than plain soap and water. Hazards of heavy exposure to antibacterial agents can increase your risk of infection and resistance to antibiotics, and leave you at risk of damage to your thyroid and reproductive system.
