This year marked the XXIII Olympic Winter Games and from February 9 to 25, those athletes competed hard for their titles! The location for this year’s games was PyeongChang, Gangwon Province, the Republic of Korea and sparked so much love via social media – helps that the mascots were totally adorable too! Admittedly, I am not an avid Olympic sport watcher, although I do like watching the skating comps from time to time. However, the politics and scandals are always something I look forward to while gracing headlines – sad, but true.
For those of you who wanted a little Cole’s notes into the most talked about headlines, these are for you!
Canadians Stick Together
Following the Gold Medal performance from Canada’s Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir – their fans went crazy! Including the Canadian born actor Ryan Reynolds who showed his support through Twitter and adding in a few ‘cents’ of his own. Whether Tess and Scott actually make it down the isle one day doesn’t matter – these two killed it! Tessa’s reply was perfectly executed and GOLD standard none the less! Check out how amazing the Canadian support was executed: Adorable!
And here I’ve been wracking my brain to come up with a post-competition career path … Scott, get the mini van!

Near Retirement Wins Gold
Aliona Savchenko competed for her 5th time in this year’s Olympic games and luckily for her she went home with a GOLD! After her brilliant performance with partner Bruno Massot, she fell to the ice in celebration and exhaustion. Dreams do come true – and this is proof!
Hockey – Truly Canadian!
Canadian women’s hockey took silver in a shoutout at the PyeongChang Olympics, leading the US team to gold. A first time in 20 years!! Fans and Canadian’s alike can no doubt sympathize with the team – heart and soul went into the game, as always. Canada proud ladies, you are still magnificent!

Japanese figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu rocked the men’s short program this year but he is making headlines and personalised hashtags for his relationship instead. Thanks to his growing ‘bromance’ with fellow competitor Javier Fernandez, these two are taking the internet by storm! Off the ice, their friendship cannot be beat! Follow along using the hashtag #Yuzuvier on social media – you won’t be sorry!
Always A Scandal
Russian officials revealed that Alexander Krushelnitsky had tested positive for being under the influence of meldonium. This news came after winning bronze in mixed doubles curling with his wife and partner Anastasia Bryzgalova.
Reminder To Stay Strong
Only 11 months after Canadian born Mark McMorris hit a tree and suffered numerous serious, near-fatal injuries he returned back to the Olympic games – talk about strength. As a result, he placed third in Men’s Slopestyle behind fellow Canadian Max Parrot, earning his second Olympic bronze medal. Truly inspiring!
Seems the Olympics always bring about some sort of faith in human kind and what’s better is seeing a tragedy turn into a victory like Shaun White’s. While preparing for the games, he smashed into the lip of the halfpipe and needed 62 stitches to his head and face – fast forward, he is now the proud recipient of his 3rd Olympic gold medal.
Olympic swimming champion Michael Phelps is now a father of TWO!! What better timing than to welcome his newest addition – he comes second to big brother Boomer who was born in 2016 and attended the Rio 2016 games. One of the worlds most well known Olympian’s couldn’t have better timing than to show the world his bundle during the games this year.
