There are so many rules to follow at the gym that it’s easy to find yourself breaking a few here and there. We’re talking about spoken AND unspoken rules. For example, don’t start a conversation with someone wearing headphones. Don’t hog the machines and for the love of all things: MAINTAIN CLEANLINESS!
The following hygienic rules should be commandments carved into gym walls everywhere, and some you can keep for yourself. If you’re breaking these rules, consider yourself a Gym Germ Offender. But it’s not too late to change. Here’s what you need to do to clean up your act.
Choose Your Undies Wisely
It might seem like second nature to wear a thong underneath your workout clothes (no VPL-visible panty lines, duh!) but this might actually be working against you. As you move around the gym, bacteria from your derriere can travel forward to your lady bits, which puts you at risk for developing a UTI (urinary tract infection). Going commando isn’t a great idea either because there’s no fabric to absorb any yeast or moisture. Opting for undies with more coverage with a breathable or moisture-wicking fabric is key to maintaining a healthy pH balance below. If you avoid this rule, you could be suffocating your Hoo-ha and putting it at risk for vaginosis.
And for the love of all V’s, don’t wear the same undies out after the gym. Wear a fresh pair- Nobody cares if you’re in a rush!
Keep Body Odor at Bay
This doesn’t mean you should be bathing yourself in perfume or body spray. In fact, in many facilities, using heavily scented products is not allowed at all. You don’t necessarily have to come straight from the shower either.
There are certain problem areas that can be controlled fairly quickly and easily. Invest in a great long-lasting deodorant or antiperspirant to keep your underarms smelling fresh and clean throughout your workout. Funky smelling feet is also a major offence that can be addressed with a foot powder or disinfectant spray.
Something we all may experience from time to time is odor “down there”. This is sometimes caused by a pH imbalance or by harmful bacteria. A great over the counter pH product you should try is pHemme® Fresh. It’s a vaginal cleanser that contains natural ingredients, is Paraben Free and pH Balanced to guard against the growth of harmful bacteria. The patented design Smooth Comfort® Applicator which is pre-filled, eliminates the discomfort from the traditional applicators, and therefore allows greater ease of penetration and maximum comfort.
Never Skip Your Post-Workout Shower
Not only is it a good idea to hit the showers to avoid smelling like sweat, but leaving perspiration to breed bacteria on your body can often lead to skin rashes, fungus or acne. None of those outcomes are attractive, or comfortable! If you really don’t have time for a full soaping, you can try sprinkling baby powder on your bod to soak up any excess moisture or baby wipes to eliminate bacteria in sweaty regions. And again, don’t forget to change into clean clothes from head to toe.
Don’t Get Cheeky!
No matter how sexy you feel with your newly sculpted booty and thighs or how hot you get during your workouts, wearing super short shorts is a no-no. Germs thrive in warm, moist environments. For example, the seat cushion on a cycle, yoga mat or bench press. You can never know for sure if the person before you wiped down the surface thoroughly enough so it’s best practice to keep your booty & V-zone covered and protected from skin rashes, bacteria, sweat or any scary infections. Go for longer leggings or shorts and you’re good to go.
Be Friends with Flip Flops
Ever think about what’s lurking on the public shower floor? It’s probably best not to think about the sweat, skin cells, mold, fungi and – yes- sometimes pee. That’s why you should never go bare foot in the gym shower. EVER. If you do, you risk ending up with athlete’s foot, and fast. Don’t think that this is something you can safely ignore. Contracting athlete’s foot or harmful fungi is more common than you think. And if you have it, you’ll end up spreading it around if you’re bare foot. Don’t splurge- buy a cheap pair and replace when necessary.
