Like any girlboss knows, with every change of season comes AMAZING new trends to hit the runway. While these are great to test out and rock while having brunch with the girls or a weekend trip to the flea market, it seems that during the hours of 9am-5pm Monday through Friday you feel like you can’t enjoy them.
Every office is different. As a Career Girl myself, I have worked in a few different office environments where some are more lax and some more conservative, if you know what I mean. I want to walk you through how to look office chic while testing out this year’s fall/winter trends, at least some of them 😉
We need to walk through some ground rules on each outfit.
- All about balance! I spoke about this here when I wrote on the cold shoulder trend. Balance is key, especially at work. You can push the limits in one aspect of the outfit but the rest needs to stay very neutral and corporate. This will enable you to try something a little different.
- There are certain trends that you just cannot wear to work! You know them . . . don’t try them 😛
- Get creative and feel confident. Confidence is Queen! When you are wearing an outfit that perhaps is pushing the envelope a little and you don’t feel confident, it becomes that much harder to pull it off!
Let’s dive into the trends!!!
HOW TO WEAR FALL TRENDS TO WORK
Surprisingly, florals are sticking around for Fall – florals for spring? Groundbreaking (had to throw in that The Devil Wears Prada reference!). They are always hot in the spring, linger for summer and for the first time in awhile this trend is lasting until Fall! A simple floral top in darker tones can really bring this trend into the work place. If your office is a little more formal, then add a blazer in a tonal colour or go bold with floral pants; this will formalize things even more.
I LOVE me some glitter in the winter months, especially on New Year’s Eve, but in the workplace this is a new thing all together! Never fear Girlboss ladies, we can make this work. I suggest adding a little glitz in a minimal way by wearing a glitter top paired with a tailored blazer. In addition, you can add a button down peeking out underneath for an even more professional feel. What do you think?
This trend is the easiest by FAR as it was practically MADE for the office! Neutral plaids in charcoals and grays are HOT HOT HOT this season – I am thrilled! I love a good tailored suit, so here we have a nice grey one paired with a more casual top and sneakers. This balances the look for a semi casual environment. If you are in a more formal setting, pair this with a pair of nude or black pumps and you’re set!
This trend is called ‘fun fur’ which implies fur in various colours. As I mentioned above, there are certain trends that you just CANNOT do. I think the ‘fur’ is a go, but for this one, if you’re working in a more conservative environment, keep it in a neutral tone. The images show a perfect pairing of a tailored, business appropriate outfit with a neutral fur accent. I cannot wait to get my hands on a look like this! I think this one will be PERFECT for the colder months ahead, while still keeping things classy and chic for the 9-5 hours.
Did you think we would skip over this one? That it wouldn’t be possible for the office? Don’t worry lady bosses, the lingerie trend IS POSSIBLE! I will say that this one requires the most BALANCE of them all. If you add too much of the trend to the look without balancing with formal pieces, you might end up looking either like you just got out of bed or should be working, well, somewhere else . . . both are BIG NO NOs! The easiest way to master this look is a neutral, preferably a black suit, and simple top with lace accents. If the top is sheer, which is a great option, wear it with a simple black camisole underneath to add some modesty to the look. You’re good to go!
