Every once in a while I stumble upon a brand that becomes an instant die hard, must-have. Now, this doesn’t happen often. I’m picky AF, but when I do come across those brands it becomes quite apparent that I can’t live without them.
Now I know what you’re thinking, what is she talking about? What’s her cult favourite, must-have item right now? Is it makeup, is it clothing? If you are thinking Sephora or Forever21 items, think again, it is gelato!
Right now I’m obsessed with ice cream, Righteous Gelato ice cream to be exact!
Now let me just say, I stumbled upon this product by accident. It was actually winter time and I was grocery shopping with my boyfriend and we were doing our weekly ice cream stock up. We were perusing our usual favourites when the packaging was what actually caught our eyes.
“Oh, I could reuse this container and freeze stuff!”
The simple packaging that could easily be washed and reused was a major selling factor for us (yes these are the things that excites adults these days). We chose a couple of flavours and headed home. It wasn’t until a few days later when I got a text that read, “OMG, that ice cream is bomb ass!” I instantly looked up their company on Instagram and learned more than I bargained to learn about well… an ice cream company.
First of all, they’re Canadian! Second of all, at the time they were featuring their new winter flavours, I was intrigued, for an ice cream company to sell brand new ice cream in winter… They had to be good! But I was most in love with their spring line, my ultimate favourite, the one that I was kicking and screaming in sadness over when it was discontinued for the summer was, Strawberry Lemonade! This flavour literally tasted like the best strawberry lemonade cocktail you have ever had! This flavour needs to come back! Their spring line also included Chocolate Easter Egg (mini egg pieces included!), Carrot Cake & Cream Cheese (OMG, second fave), Lavender Vanilla Bean (a fresh twist on a classic).
Have no fear though, their sorbetto and gelatos that are standard to their line are also delicious. My favourites outside of the seasonal line is the Raspberry Lime, Frozen Hot Chocolate, and Campfire S’mores! After reaching out to Righteous, in hopes to inherit a lifetime supply of gelato, they were kind enough to share a few fun facts about their brand that we thought were important to share!
- They are B Corp certified- latest score 111!
- They do not add any artificial flavours or colours to our gelato/sorbetto- all natural, real ingredients.
- Their headquarters are Calgary, Alberta and they source their ingredients as locally as possible which means milk from Dairy Farmers of Canada, Berries from BC, and honey from Alberta!
- Gelato has less sugar, air, and fat than typical ice cream.
- Their containers are recyclable and encourage upcycling (check out #recyclehappiness on Instagram). Most ice cream containers contain a wax coating and thus cannot be recycled.
- The kitchen where they produce all of their grocery pints is nut free, the gelato is gluten-free, and they have egg, dairy, and fat-free options as well!
As a company that started as “the little gelato shop that could” (as a scoop shop) can now be found in over 1000 retailers across Canada! And that’s not all they have to be proud of, they first entered the grocery market at Calgary CO-OP by making two pints that were sold together. This was a fundraising effort, $2 from each sale went to the reconstruction of the Calgary Zoo after the devastating floods of 2013. After that was a huge success. They give back to their community on a regular basis. Their newest flavour to hit shelves is called WUNDER KID. It’s a cookies & cream gelato and it’s in partnership with the MEtoWE foundation.
Like I said, it’s not often that I find a brand that I love from the moment I dive in, but Righteous Gelato has the flavour that you look for in a delicious ice cream plus when you buy it you are giving yourself the opportunity to help your community also. I don’t mind investing my paycheque in something that great!
