For some people, the winter solstice seems dark and gloomy. However, as Christmas approaches, sometimes it helps to think of all the things we like about this time of year. Here are some things that I love about the winter holiday season.
Yes, despite the cold!
1. Sip peppermint hot chocolate
Lay down a few blankets outside near your house or go to a park that is close to home with your friend or significant other. Pack some snacks into a picnic kit along with hot chocolate, marshmallows, peppermint, and some shortbread cookies. Then enjoy some alone time for the two of you by cuddling up to your sweetheart and sharing some hot cocoa.
2. Drive through neighbour’s holiday lights
If you’re looking for a holiday date idea, you should think about taking an evening to check out the seasonal scenery. Drive around in your pajamas to look at Christmas lights! Play Christmas music and get into the spirit of the season. Take a sightseeing tour of the lights in your neighbourhood or, alternatively, of the festive displays in nearby storefront windows. Enjoy the fresh air and beautiful scenery without spending a dime!
3. Attend local Christmas market
The ambience at the Toronto Christmas Market will sweep you off your feet and almost feels surreal. Amidst giant candy canes, Christmas lights, and even a carousel – it’s the perfect destination for a date. Warm spiced mulled wine for purchase to sip on, while you and your date scope out the food and browse some unique shops. There are usually stalls of Christmas ornaments, artisan gifts for sale, hot cider, turkey legs, live music, and general Christmas cheer.
4. Learn to ice skate outdoors
If you’ve ever seen a romantic comedy, you know that holding hands while skating around an ice rink is etiquette during the holidays. Don’t try to escape it; embrace it! Whether you’re braving the weather and ice-skating on a natural pond or heading to an indoor rink, you’ll definitely be seeing other couples, both old and new. Dare each other to try classic ice-skating moves like a turn or a jump and head out for hot cocoa after you’ve fallen on your behind way too many times.
