In a smartphone obsessed world, it can be quite difficult to consider unplugging even for a moment. The idea makes many of us uncomfortable, and dare I say, it even makes us feel naked. We have become so dependent on our devices to keep us on time, fed (I’m looking at you, UberEats) and entertained. But this year, I want to live more in the moment and less on my phone, slowly unplugging and reconnecting to both myself and others.
Here are some ways how I plan on doing so:
1. Actually unplug
This means turning your phone off — not just leaving it on silent. Rid yourself of the temptation to check the time or your notifications. Give yourself that much needed break from social media. Whatever you may think you are missing will still be here when you get back.
2. Check something off your to do list
This can be a DIY project or attending a new fitness class. I often like to try new restaurants, so when I do this I leave my phone at home so that I can engage with whomever I am sharing the meal with. You’ll be surprised to see how little we actually need our phones when eating food!
3. Get some rest
Leaving your mobile device off means you get undisturbed sleep. The light emitted from your screen can impact your body clock. Be sure to turn off your phone at least two hours before sleeping to get the best result.
4. Spa Day
Since most spas request that you leave your phone off during treatments, you will automatically be hands free of your device. Let yourself relax and enjoy getting pampered. This can also be done by giving yourself a spa day at home. Try out that new face mask or hairstyle and let yourself be present and in the moment.
Ask yourself: When was the last time you spent time with yourself without distractions? Don’t be afraid to ask how much of your life is being lived through a screen rather than being truly lived. While not everyone has to opportunity to completely disconnect from the online world every single day, it is important to unplug for a few hours each week to reap the benefits.
